Pakistan placed orders for single-dose Cansino Bio vaccine

The National Health Services, Regulation and Coordination (NHS, R&C) told the press on Tuesday that Pakistan has put an order for Single dose CanSino Bio vaccine Ad5-nCoV vaccine (Cansino Bio) for Covid-19, with the first batch scheduled to arrive in Pakistan ‘within a week.

“We have put an order for Single dose CanSino Bio vaccine , and the first batch of 60,000 doses is expected to be shipped to Pakistan within a week,” a National Health Services official told the Press, adding that no exact delivery date could be provided at this time.

The single-dose Chinese vaccine, according to the official, can be provided to people of all ages because it was found to be effective in trials in Pakistan and other countries involving people aged 18 to 80. One-dose was also deemed to be ‘logistically very good’ for deployment in countries such as Pakistan, according to the NHS official.

Pakistan plans to vaccinate its 40-50 million adult population with a combination of Chinese and European vaccines, while a small number of mRNA vaccines produced by Pfizer-BioNtech and Moderna may be used if they are available, according to the official. Storage and deployment capacity for these vaccines is being improved.

Following successful trials at five leading health institutions in Pakistan, officials revealed that CanSino Biologics Inc.’s vaccine would also be ‘manufactured in Pakistan. In the second week of February 2021, the registration board of Pakistan’s Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) granted emergency use authorization to CanSino Biologics’ single-dose vaccine.
